The main difference between a periodic and a simple harmonic motion is to & fro movement. Just suppose a pendulum has both the periodic & simple harmonic motion because there is a restoring force acting on the Bob and it makes the Bob to move backward while it reaches it’s kinetic energy becomes zero and that’s why it has to again move towards the another extreme point. But in case of circular motion there is no to and fro movement. So, circular motion is the case of periodic motion but not of SHM.
