Which of the following inhibits the growth of lateral auxillary buds?
Options
(a) auxin
(b) ethylene
(c) cytokinin
(d) gibberellin
Correct Answer:
auxin
Explanation:
Apical dominance is the phenomenon of suppression of growth in nearby lateral buds by the presence of apical bud. Removal of apical bud causes sprouting of lateral buds. However, if a paste of auxin is painted on the cut end of the decapitated shoot, the lateral bud remain inhibited, as if the apical bud is present. It clearly indicates that it is the auxin which is responsible for apical dominance.
