Activated charcoal is used to remove colouring matter from pure substances. It works by
Options
(a) oxidation
(b) reduction
(c) bleaching
(d) adsorption
Correct Answer:
adsorption
Explanation:
It has been observed that the surface of a soild (or liquid) has the tendency to attract and retain the molecules of other immisicible phase with which it is brought into contact.these molecules remain only at the surface and do not go deeper into the bulk. This tendency to accumulation of molecular species at the surface than in the bulk of a solid (or liquid) is termed adsorption.

Activated charcoal also known as activated carbon or activated coal is a form of carbon that has been processed to have small, low volume pores that increase the surface area available for adsorption or chemical reaction.
Because of its large surface area it has capacity to adsorb gases and colorants. When it is added into a solution of food coloring, the coloring is adsorbed.
It is produced from carbonaceous materials such as nutshells, wood and coal.
Applications of activated charcoal:
• Metal extraction
• Sewage treatment
• Gold recovery
• Gas purification
• Water purification
