Summary of NEET Syllabus 2020

The NEET syllabus for 2020 prescribed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and CBSE, mainly covers 3 subjects, Physics, Chemistry, Biology. For these three subjects, after reviewing state board syllabus of various states, Central Board of Secondary Education and National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Medical Council of India (MCI) has prescribed the following syllabus for NEET examination.

Most of the topics covered in the NEET syllabus have a direct correlation with Class 11 and Class 12 NCERT textbooks. By referring just the NCERT textbooks, one can score most of the questions in the NEET examination. Find topic wise NEET syllabus as well as detailed syllabus for NEET examination.

Topic 2 – Kinematics

  • The frame of Reference, Motion in Straight Line, speed and velocity, Position time graph, Uniform Motion, Nonuniform motion, Instantaneous velocity and Average Speed, Uniformly accelerated motion, position time graph. Uniformly Accelerated Motion – Velocity time graph.
  • Differentiation and Integration – Elementary concepts for describing motion. Scalar and Vector Quantities. General Vectors. Equality of Vectors. Addition / Subtraction of Vectors. Multiplication of Vectors by the real number. Position and Displacement vectors. Relative Velocity.

Topic 3 – Laws of Motion

Topic 4 – Work, Energy, Power

  • Constant force and variable force -Work Done; Kinetic energy, Power, Work Energy theorem.
  • Potential energy, Spring Potential Energy, Conservative forces; Kinetic and Potential Energies – Conservation of mechanical energy; non-conservative forces; motion in a vertical circle, inelastic and elastic collisions in 1 and 2 dimensions.

Topic 5 – Motion of System of Particles

  • Centre of the mass of a two-particle system, momentum conservation and center of mass motion. Centre of the mass of a rigid body; center of mass of uniform rod.
  • Moment of a force,-torque, angular momentum, conservation of angular momentum with some examples.
  • Rigid Body Rotation. Equilibrium of rigid bodies. Equation of rotational motion, comparison of rotational and linear motions; Radius of Gyration. Moment of inertia. Moment of Inertia for simple geometrical objects. Statement of perpendicular and parallel axes theorems and its applications.

Detailed Chemistry Syllabus for NEET

Topic 1 – Basic Concepts of Chemistry

  • Scope of Chemistry and Its Importance
  • Laws of Chemical Combination. Dalton’s atomic theory. Elements, Atoms, and Molecules.
  • Atomic and Molecular Masses. Mole concept and Molar Mass. Percentage composition. Empirical and Molecular Formula. Chemical Reactions. Stoichiometry and Calculations based on Stoichiometry.

Topic 2 – Structure of Atom

  • Atomic number, isotopes, and isobars. The concept of shells and subshells, dual nature of light and matter. Heisenberg uncertainty principle and de Broglie’s relationship.
  • Quantum Number, Concept of orbital, shapes of s,p and d orbitals, Rules for filling electrons in orbitals- Pauli Exclusion Principle and Aufbau principle. Hund’s rule, electronic configuration of atoms, stability of half filled and completely filled orbitals

Topic 3 – Classification of Elements and Periodicity In Properties

  • Modern periodic law.  The long form of periodic table. Trends in periodic properties of elements – Ionic Radii, Atomic radii, Ionization enthalpy, Electronegativity, Electron gain enthalpy, valence.

Topic 4 – Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

  • Valence electrons, Covalent Bond and Ionic bond. Polar Character of Covalent Bond. Bond parameters, Lewis structure, valence bond theory, Geometry of Molecules, resonance, VSEPR theory
  • The concept of hybridization involving s, p and d orbitals, and shapes of some simple molecules, molecular orbital theory of homonuclear diatomic molecules (qualitative idea only). Hydrogen bond.

Topic 5 – States of Matter – Liquid and Gases

  • Three states of matter.  Interactions between molecular. Bonding Types, boiling points and melting points, the role of gas laws of elucidating the concept of the molecule, Charle’s Law, Boyle’s law, Avogadro’s Law and Gay Lussac’s law.
  • The ideal behavior of gases, Deviation from Ideal Behavior, empirical derivation of the gas equation. Ideal Gas Equation. Avogadro number.  Elementary Idea of Kinetic energy and molecular speeds. Critical Temperature and liquefaction of gases.
  • Liquid State – Surface Tension, Vapour pressure and viscosity (No mathematical derivations).

Topic 6 – Thermodynamics

  • First law of thermodynamics – Enthalpy and Internal energy, Specific heat and heat capacity, measurement of U and H, Hest Summation – Hess’s law of constant. Enthalpy of: bond formation, dissociation, combustion, sublimation, ionization, atomization, phase transition, solution, and dilution.
  • The introduction of entropy as a state function, 2nd law of thermodynamics, Gibbs energy change for the non-spontaneous and spontaneous process, criteria for spontaneity and equilibrium.
  • Brief Introduction to Third law of thermodynamics

Topic 7 – Equilibrium

  • Equilibrium in Chemical and physical processes, dynamic nature of equilibrium, Equilibrium Constant, the law of chemical equilibrium. Factors That Affect equilibrium. Le Chatelier’s principle; Ionisation of bases and acids, weak and strong electrolytes. Ionic equilibrium and degree of ionization, Acid Strength. Ionization of polybasic acids, concept of PH., Elementary Idea of Hydrolysis of salts, buffer solutions, Solubility Product and Henderson equation. Illustrative Examples of common ion effect.

Topic 8 – Redox Reactions

  • The concept of Reduction and oxidation, Oxidation Number, Redox reactions, How to balance redox reactions in terms of gain of electron or loss gain of an electron. Balancing Redox Reaction in terms of change in oxidation numbers.

Topic 8 – Hydrogen

  • Occurrence, Hydrogen isotopes, preparation, Hydrogen Properties, and uses; hydrides-ionic, covalent and interstitial; Chemical and Physical and properties of water and heavy water; Preparation of hydrogen peroxide – Structure and Uses of Hydrogen peroxide.

Topic 9 – S Block Elements

  • Group I and Group II elements: Introduction, Occurrence, electronic configuration. Ist element of each group – properties, the diagonal relationship, Variation of properties such as ionic and atomic radii and ionization enthalpy, chemical reactivity with water, hydrogen, oxygen, and halogens; uses.
  • Important Compounds – Preparation and Properties of Sodium Chloride, Sodium carbonate, Sodium hydrogen carbonate, and sodium hydroxide. The biological importance of Potassium and Sodium.
  • Industrial use of limestone and lime, biological importance of Calcium and Magnesium.

Topic 10 –  P-Block Elements

  • General Introduction to p-Block Elements. Group 13 elements: Introduction, Occurrence, Electronic Configuration, Variation of properties, oxidation states, chemical reactivity, anomalous properties of Ist element of the group; Boron,
  • Group 13 elements: Introduction, Occurrence, Electronic Configuration, Variation of properties, oxidation states, chemical reactivity, anomalous properties of the Ist element of the group – Boron, Important compounds: Boric Acids, Borax, Boron Hydrides. Aluminium: reactions with acids and alkalies and uses.
  • General 14 elements: Introduction, Occurrence, Configuration, Oxidation States, Variation of properties, chemical reactivity trends, the anomalous behavior of Ist element. Carbon- Physical and Chemical Properties – allotropic forms. Uses of some important compounds: oxides. Topic 1 – Diversity In Living World

  • What is living? Biodiversity. Need for Classification. Three domains of life. Taxonomy and Systematics. The concept of Species and taxonomical hierarchy. Binomial Nomenclature, Tools for Study of Taxonomy – Herbaria, Zoos, Museums, Botanical Garden
  • Two And Five Kingdom Classification. Classification and Salient Features of Monera, Fungi, and Protista into major groups. Virus and Lichens.
  • Classification and Features of Plants. Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Algae, Angiosperms, and Gymnosperms (3 to 5 distinguishing features and minimum of 2 examples for each category). Angiosperm -salient features and classification up-to classes with examples.
