Sarcoplasmic reticulum is specialized smooth endoplasmic reticulum of muscle cells which stores Ca⁺⁺ ions. During contraction phase of muscle, Ca⁺⁺ ions are released from sarcoplasmic lumen to sarcoplasm and during relaxation phase of muscle, Ca⁺⁺ ions are pumped back into lumen.
