The artificial systems of classification were based on the habit of the plants classified. Theophrastus classified all plants on the basis of form and texture. He recognised trees, shrubs, undershrubs and herbs and distinguished between annual, biennial and perennial plants. Theophrastus, the father of botany classified and described about 450 cultivated plants in his Historia Plantarum. He considered the trees to be highest evolved while herb very primitive. His classification was strictly artificial.
