Chunking Mobile Numbers

Let’s see why we able to remember number in groups but not individual digits. This is because Our working memory has capacity to store only 7 things at a time. To overcome this limitation, we are chunking the digits together. When information is chunked, each chunk or group occupies one slot in the working memory out of the 7 available slots. If you are wondering about what is this working memory. Please watch the video “How Our Brain Learns” given in the description below before proceeding this video.

Working Memory Capacity and Intelligence

Intelligence of the student is largely determined by the number of items he or she can hold in their working memory. Students whose working memory size is less than or equal to 3, find it difficult to solve problems and communicate effectively. Chunking is the one of the technique which can help you to Improve your working memory size.

You will not only see improvement in your studies but in your intelligence level as well. How good is that? Getting two mangoes by throwing one stone.

Applying Chunking in Learning/Studying

Now, let me tell you how to apply this technique in your learning, When you read the book, don’t try to check your understanding after you complete the chapter. Do it as small as possible, probably after a paragraph. If you feel that you do not understand a paragraph, read the paragraph again and again. Try to understand its meaning before moving to the next paragraph. If you cannot understand its meaning, what it means is that you do not have understanding of the basic concepts mentioned in that paragraph.

Search that concept in Google or better Search that concept in neetlab.com . Try to understand the basic concepts before moving on to the next paragraph. When you do this, you may feel your study speed decreases a lot. But Don’t worry, your understanding is improving a lot.

Your success in competitive examination and work place is determined by the level of your understanding and intelligence. Take my word, By Being slow and steady, you are going to win the race.

Study is Hard work By Armstrong

During my school days, I was fortunate to read the book “Study is hard work” written by Armstrong. He says that summarize each week’s lecture into single sheet of paper. Write down important concepts and their relationships in single sheet of paper improves our understanding and gives us better clarity.

He says that you should create one page summary again after a month, using the four summary sheets which you had prepared every week.
He asks us to do this summarization activity again after few months and after completing the course. At the end, you will have summary of that whole subject in one single sheet of paper.

He says that, this technique is the effective way of learning because creating one page summary for the complete subject or text book requires understanding of the concepts, thinking about those concepts finding connections between them. More importantly it forces us to decide what is the most important concepts and write the essence of the learning in a single sheet of paper.

During my GATE preparation, I used this chunking technique extensively. It not only helped me to secure 403rd rank in GATE examination, it also improved my working memory size and my intelligence level.
