Duration of How to Crack NEET Course

Skills Tested in NEET

At the skill level, What skills do you think are being tested in competitive exams like NEET?

Lower order thinking skills such as reading, writing, memorization which is taught in schools are not sufficient to score in competitive exams. These lower order thinking skills are sufficient to get the first rank in board examinations but it may not even help you to qualify in NEET.

In NEET, there are no long answers, so you cannot fill the answer sheet with long essays and include important keywords then and there. Instead, you are given multiple choice answers to choose from. This requires higher order thinking skills such as application, analysis, and evaluation. Though memorization of facts and understanding of concepts are also tested, it is the higher order thinking skills which are given importance while setting question papers for competitive examinations like NEET.

Simple Physics Question

I would like to start this How to Crack NEET video course with a simple physics question. Don’t skip this question. Please listen carefully and try to answer.

A cardboard was cut into 2 pieces. One piece was two-thirds length of the second piece and the second piece exceeds the first piece in length by four feet. What is the original length of the cardboard before the cardboard was cut?

If you would like to take some time to get the answer, please pause the video till you solve this problem.

How much time did you take to figure out the answer? If you have taken just a few seconds to figure out, it means you are already following good learning techniques. If you have taken more than 10 seconds, don’t worry. This course is designed for you to improve your learning and problem-solving skills. If you cannot figure out anything from the problem statement.

Don’t think that you are the worst, I know students who simply applied equations to solve this problem and gave negative length as the answer. When something is cut ⅔ what is left would be ⅓ which can never be greater than 2/3.This problem is logically impossible.

Transfer of Knowledge

Before getting on to the topic, I would like to introduce one of the key factors which differentiate toppers from the rest. The key concept is called as the transfer of knowledge. The transfer is the ability of the student to extend what has been learned in one context to apply in new contexts. The learning methodologies such as rote learning adopted by normal students result in effective memory retrieval but a very poor transfer of knowledge. There are methodologies like the ones employed in NEETlab such as Concept Maps, Association, Compare and Contrast which results in both effective memory retrieval as well as the high transfer of knowledge.

Judd’s Experiment of Understanding

I would like to share the result of a famous experiment conducted by Dr. Judd. He asked two groups of students to practice throwing darts on the target which is kept 8 inches under the water. One group of students are taught about refraction of light and the other group is asked to directly start the practice. To his surprise, both groups scored equally good after the practice. He then fixed the target at 4 inches below water instead of 8 inches and asked both the groups to throw darts. The group which knew the refraction principle performed much better because they understood what they were doing and were able to apply their knowledge to that situation. What does this experiment signify?

Two things, First one is understanding helps you to apply your knowledge and the second one is that practice alone does not make you perfect. Hard work is not sufficient it takes smart work to score high on competitive exams like NEET. If the tool you use or the technique you choose is wrong how harder you work, you will never hit your target.

The science of learning is not memorization but understanding. Knowledge is all about knowing but intelligence is all about using. Students who understand the concept very well will be able to use it in a different context when the need arises. Students are given limited opportunities to understand concepts. Textbooks are filled with facts that students are expected to memorize and recollect the facts during the examination.

Understanding Vs Memorizing

Research conducted using leading experts in the various field reveals an important learning principle . The ability to solve problem strongly depends on the understanding of the concept rather than memorizing the concept. There is a big difference between disconnected facts and usable knowledge. Knowledge of experts is organized and connected to important concepts. Their knowledge is conditionalized in such that way they know the contexts in which it is applicable; it supports understanding and transfers to other contexts rather than the ability to remember.

For example which one is easy to push, a car or a truck. We all know the answer that car is easy to push but have you thought it is associated with Newton’s 2nd law of motion. F=ma . The law states that when the mass of the object increases, force to push that object also increases. If we memorize Newton’s law or formula without understanding what is tries to convey, it would end up in poor transfer of learning.

Current Issues

Neuroscientists and Educational Psychologists have given us lot of insights on the structure and function of the brain. More importantly, recent studies reveal, how learning changes the structure of the brain. But unfortunately, these insights and findings are not yet implemented in educational institutions as well as in coaching centers. Moreover, emerging technologies such as computers are leading the development of many new techniques to enhance and guide learning.

What is NEETLab?

NEETLab is an effort to merge the computer technology and brain research findings to enhance your higher order thinking skills. This would help to clear competitive examinations like NEET. NEET lab’s goal is not just to help you clear the NEET exam. But, to equip yourself with necessary learning and thinking skills which would transform yourself to a smart and successful doctor.
